Burst of Color and Culture in Downtown West Palm Beach

Downtown West Palm Beach has always been a little more colorful than the average city, but lately local artists are literally painting the town red – and a spectrum of other colors too. Clematis District art

Public art projects like the massive, al fresco murals by Eddie Mendieta are beautifying the Clematis District. The wall outside Macy’s at CityPlace showcases up-and-coming talent through photography and other art forms selected by Eg2 art gallery, a showcase for Palm Beach County’s most artistic students. Downtown West Palm Beach’s newest galleries are also making a splash, with Kenneth Plasket Gallery offering originals by the art world’s most famed players like Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, and Lois Brezinski Artworksfeaturing tropical prints to suit the Florida lifestyle.

Visitors looking to fit in some extra culture this weekend should check out the third annual CityPlace Art Festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 31 and Sunday, Apr. 1. With specially selected glass pieces, ceramics, paintings, jewelry, life-size sculptures and more that range from $25 to $20,000, the Howard Alan production offers something for both browsing beginners and experienced collectors. It’s free and well worth the visit. We found this quirky little table here last year, and added it to our office lobby. Go to cityplace.com for a sneak peek.CityPlace Art Fair table

The West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority plans to launch “Glass Front Gallery” exhibitions with the County Cultural Council of Palm Beach County this Spring. The Downtown “collective” will display two-dimensional art, sculpture and installations by local artists and groups in storefront windows throughout the Clematis District. The street-side art will be unveiled in May; stay tuned for more details at wpbgo.com.

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts Breaks Ground on First New Property to the Palm Beaches Since 2009

The Palm Beach County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau today joined Hyatt Hotels & Resorts and Kolter Group, LLC as they broke ground on their newest Hyatt Place hotel, conveniently located in the heart of downtown Delray Beach at 104 N.E. 2nd Avenue.  The new hotel will be the second Hyatt Place in The Palm Beaches— the first of which opened in February 2009 in downtown West Palm Beach— and the first new property developed in the County since the Seagate Resort & Spa in November 2009, also located in downtown Delray Beach.

In addition to its many hotel properties, Delray Beaches’ downtown district also boasts more than 130 restaurants, dozens of cultural institutions including the Morikami Museum, major annual events such as the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships, two miles of white sandy accessible beach, over 350 shops and 20 galleries, and an outdoor arts district, Pineapple Grove, further demonstrating that Delray Beach is truly one of the most thriving destinations in all of South Florida.

The property will be constructed and developed by Kolter Commercial— headquartered in Palm Beach County— and will feature 134 spacious guestrooms, all of which will include a spa-inspired bathroom, 42-inch HDTV, and an eight-foot sectional sofa-sleeper.  Complimentary continental breakfast, property-wide Wi-Fi, an elevated outdoor pool, and secured parking will be available to all hotel guests. The new Hyatt Place will also feature a full-service lobby bar and mixed-use retail space, as well as executive boardrooms and flexible meeting space for business guests.
